Of all the things the pandemic changed in our lives, the unexpected months of working from home brought significant peace and joy to my heart, despite the season of challenge lived in. As a teacher, I find the moments when I can knock out work from my home office space to be moments that are encouraging and full of hope. Whether you spend majority of your work hours working from a home office space, or maybe just a few hours outside of your normal workday, I truly believe that your home office space should be a place that is equally inviting and inspiring. No matter the space you are working with, here are FIVE ways to make your home office space work for you!

The first step in creating your home office is to create a room that you enjoy to be in. You don’t have to have the largest of spaces, nor do you have to have a full room devoted to your craft, but you do need a space that you enjoy being in. A place that you can enjoy being in is also a place that you can enjoy working in. Think of what inspires you! Use colors that bring you joy and creativity. Utilize basic home decor items that inspire your heart. Do you love to read – incorporate bookshelves as part of your office space. This also allows for a great organizational system as well. Do you run off of coffee? Incorporate a coffee bar within your office to save you the extra steps of having to go refuel in the kitchen.
Plan out your home office space with the essentials that you need to be able to get your work done. Build your space around your desk or work station. Add a pop of color with a rug underneath your workstation or desk. Through in elements that inspire you. Do you like greenery, add in a house plant. Do you like inspired quotes? Hang a few in a frame on a wall. For more ideas on what to include in your home office space check out these Home Office Essentials.
The second step to creating a home office space that works for you it to utilize all of your senses to create a sensational home office space. Our senses hold incredible power. How we feel when we smell our favorite scent, indulge in our favorite beverage, or wrapped in our favorite blanket or cozy pair of socks can allow us to get in the right mindset to truly thrive in what we do. Therefore, it is so important to utilize all your senses to create your ideal home office space.
For example, have your favorite candle sitting on the corner of your desk. Every time sit down to work, light your candle to help inspire you. Or place your favorite essential oil blend in your diffuser. Have a cute coaster to keep your favorite beverage to satisfy your taste. Keep a blanket over the back of your chair. Turn on your favorite playlist to help motivate and inspire you while you work. The opportunities are truly endless when you use your senses to create your ideal home office space.
Your third step to making your home office space completely your own is to have your very own kind of office organizational system that works just for you! A system that allows you to know exactly where everything is to avoid the extra steps in getting your work set up for the day. Even more, create an easy set-up and clean-up process to allow you to efficiently maximize your time spent working in your home office.
Focus on the essentials that you use in a workday and organize your space to what makes the most sense. Do you need paper trays on your desk? A different cubby system within arms’ reach? A cute storage system to hide any mess or clutter? In order to make your office space unique to you, organization is key!
As fun as it is to design a home office space that works for you, the true trick of the trade is to create a home office space that is practical for what you need to get accomplished during the day. Think of the actual items you need in a work day. What type of work station do you need? What kind of materials do you absolutely need to get the things you have to do, done? Do you need a printer? A large workstation? Or does a small desk work just fine? What kind of chargers do you need? Notebooks? Writing utensils?
Start with a list of the things you use the most to have a successful work day and then execute a plan within your home office space for how you are going to set up those items. For example, in my own personal home office space, I have my printer set up along my wall of bookshelves, closest to the outlet, and all the power cords neatly organized in a wicker basket next to it. This way I can easily access what I need, yet can hide the clutter as I work. The more clutter and the more dysfunction, the less work you will be able to get done!

One more final tip for you in creating your home office space – have your personal, favorite collection of office supplies loaded and ready to be used to help you as you get all the things done. Maybe it is just me, but I find SO much joy when I have my favorite office accessories close by when I work. I am talking about your favorite pens, sticky notes, and notepads. The kinds of things that spark enthusiasm while you work! The truth of the matter is, you have to find little ways to bring joy to everything you do! And when you can bring joy to your home office space you are allowing yourself even more opportunity to shine in all that you do!
