It can be easy to get caught up in the chaos of everyday life and the overwhelm of so many of us always being busy! The challenge to maintain a positive outlook and a happy spirit is definitely a battle. The good news though is that it is much easier than you think to stay in control of your mindset. The great news is that it is actually doable to make today truly a great day. To help make this a reality for you, here are 12 unconventional tools you need to make today truly a great day!
I am going to share with you 12 specific things that you can do to have a great day. Think of this as specific tools you can rely on when things start to get a little out of hand, to re-center your mind and heart. These are tools and things you can use in your day to help you make the best day possible, but they aren’t like the normal tools that you would often think of. My hope is that through these 12 tips you can find an answer to a problem you have been searching, and find a little more joy in your heart! Here are the 12 Unconventional Tools You Need To Make Today Truly A Great Day.
The first tool you need to make today truly a great day is a good outfit. Yes, think power outfit. There is so much joy and feelings of empowerment that can happen when you are loving what you are wearing and owning it for the day. Whether you are going into the professional workspace and you want to feel your best by looking your best, a tool to utilize to ensure that you make today a great day is a good outfit. Maybe a go-to blazer with a pair of colored chinos and throw on your favorite pair of studded mules to feel the part. Or your go to jumpsuit that empowers you unlike anything else.
This doesn’t have to be just for the professional space either. Are you working out of the house? Throw on your favorite outfit, maybe your comfiest pair of joggers, favorite house shoes, and favorite graphic sweatshirt to allow yourself to thrive in your to-dos because you feel good in what you are wearing.
Are you running errands for the day? Wear something that you feel so good in. Your favorite boyfriend jeans, basic boyfriend tee and white sneakers. There is magic to happen when you take the time to dress the part. Truthfully, my days are ALWAYS better on the days where I am wearing one of my favorite outfits. And yours can be too. So number one unconventional tool for making today a great day – wear a GOOD outfit!

This brings us to number two on the tools you need to make today a great day and that is a power playlist. YES! We underestimate the power of music. Some days when I am trying to work through a long to-do list, or a big workload, or spending a good bit of time driving in the car, and I don’t turn to music, I feel a difference. Compared to the days when I embrace my playlist, I am more in my feels. On those days I experience more joy, more peace, more happiness. Please, don’t ever underestimate the power of a good playlist.
The third tool you need to make today a great day – dedicated YOU time. Make sure you are carving out time that is simply for you and you alone. This could be in the morning before your family wakes up. Dedicated you time is extremely important. I am currently working on this within our own home and my personal life to create new habits to allow myself to have more time for me in the morning.
Dedicated YOU time does not include you working. This does not include you doing things in the home. This is not talking about you going into the laundry room to complete four loads of laundry. Yes, those are things that need to get done. However, dedicated you time is all about YOU. In order to make each day the BEST day possible, you need time to allow YOU to be YOU. You need time to be able to pour into your heart, and your soul, and your dreams based on doing the things you know you need.
This could look like a workout, or quiet time journaling, spending time doing a Bible study, or reading a book. Or maybe this is your bubble bath at the end of time. Whatever this looks like for you, start out by incorporating this into your daily life. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day to start out, do it. It will absolutely be worth it.
Alright, now the teacher in me is speaking here. The fourth tool you need to make today a truly GREAT day is a really, really good pen! I am absolutely serious. There is something about writing with a really great pen that is smooth and happy, you feel like you can accomplish anything. I love all things pens. My favorites include the Sharpie S-Jel black ink pens, these are my favorite for all things writing in my planner and notes. I also love the Papermate Ink Joy pens. These are my preferred favorites for grading. Another more recent find that is a bargain are the felt tip pens from Amazon Basics. These are very similar to the Papermate Flair Tip pens but for a fraction of the price.
Definitely bring with you throughout your day a really, really good pen. This allows you to jot things down in your planner, your notebook, your journal and feel really, really good about. Please tell me you can relate to this! Truthfully though, don’t ever underestimate the power of a really, really good pen! Having a good pen is ESSENTIAL to having a really good day.
And the teacher in me continues to speak. You need your planner, your journal, or your note pad to help you have a really good day. You need something to be able to assist you in processing through the day. Even if it is just to help you write things down, to help you with a brain dump, or to release the stress of the chaotic thoughts flowing through your brain and to have something on paper. In order to have a great day, you need something to go with you to support you. To support you in your action, to support you in your planning,
This can be a sweet little notepad, or a month-by-month calendar, or daily planner. Whatever it is, you just need a paper sort-of essential to help you keep track of the things. Now, if you are anti-paper and avoid writing things down because you LIVE in the notes section of your phone, the one note I would like to add is this.
There is power in taking the thoughts that come to your brain and actually writing them out on paper. When you physically write things down on paper you are allowing that thought to live on the paper, as opposed to your brain. This is a way to help alleviate stress and anxiety. Plus, when you go to write or record things on your phone, that is a whole lot of distractions that can help avoid you to getting to your destination because you are having to go into your phone to get to where you are trying to go. A planner, journal, notepad is essential to making your day a GREAT day!
The sixth way to ensure today is going to be A GREAT DAY is to workout. In order to have a great day, one of the tools you need is to workout. I am saying this as a goal of mine as well. But I know for my happiness, my wholeness, and wellness, it is essential for me to move, to workout. Adding a workout into your day is definitely a tool to utilize to make it a great day. This doesn’t have to be formal. It can be simple. It can look ugly. But it just needs to be done. Try to find 30 minutes of movement. By doing this it will make your day truly a great day!
Number seven, a happy beverage. For me, if I know there is something happy I can drink during the day, that is going to elevate my day and make it a better day. I love sipping on an iced coffee during a work-block or work session. Or a nice kombucha, or sparkling water. Find a happy beverage that you can utilize, that you can drink, that you can look forward to during the day and that will make you happy.
The eighth tool to use daily, in order to have a great day is to have a plan. Know what it is that you are doing. What needs to get done each day? What are the goals you hope to accomplish? What tasks need to be completed? Who needs to be where? In order to have a great day, you need to have a plan for that great day. Set yourself up for success. It is SO easy to want to fly by the seat of your pants, and I will just figure it out and go with the flow. BUT, we really aren’t designed for that. It is more comfortable that way, but that is not what is best.
Maybe it is because we are truly afraid to sit down and face all that we need to do because we know once we do that we will realize we don’t actually have enough time to get all the things done. However, we have to start somewhere! In order to go forward and have your best day possible, you need to have a plan for that best day. What are your meals going to be? What do you need to do? What are you hoping to accomplish?
Trust me here. If you can start to slowly incorporate adding little plans here and there to your day and coming up with that structure and articulating it in your planner, your notepad, or your journal – it is going to lead to success. I can assure you of that!
In order to have an incredible day you need connection. Connection to other human beings. Personal connection or digital connection. In order to have a great day, you need to have connection. Reach out to somebody and see how they are doing and don’t just stop there. Seek out a person’s heart and soul and truly figure out how they are doing. Have a real, deep conversation with your spouse, your kids, family members, your friends.
Call them. Seek them out and get to know them better and where they are in that given moment of their life. By getting plugged in to other people, it allows YOU to have the BEST day possible because it allows your heart and soul to focus on THEM. To encourage, to pour into them. Which at the same time, also encourages, and pours into YOU as well!
The tenth way to ensure today is a really great day – eat healthy snacks. Have things to eat that can fuel your body properly. Things that will nourish you, build you up, and provide you with the stamina that you need to be able to get ALL the things you want to get done, done! By incorporating healthy snacks throughout the day is a way to help have a better day, by fueling yourself the correct way. Allowing your body to feel good, feel its best.
Some of my favorite healthy snacks include fruit, hummus ( a big fan of the Boar’s Head chocolate hummus), love yogurt with blueberries, strawberries & the Birthday Cake granola by Safe & Fair. Healthy snacks is a great thing to incorporate throughout your day to help you live your best day!
Have a good book that you can read, that you can escape to, to make today a truly great day. I mentioned this also in the 11 Simple Ways To Find More Joy In Your Life about the reason to have a book to escape to. This also is an unconventional tool needed to make the day great. When you find yourself with a free moment, instead of scrolling endlessly and mindlessly through your social apps, open up a book. This is definitely a tool to utilize to have a great day.
The most important unconventional tool of the entire list, in order to truly make any day the greatest day, it is absolutely essential to have the right mindset. You need to wake up with the intention that today is going to be good. You need to wake up with the determination that it IS going to be a GOOD day. That even if things happen, even if things beat you down or throw you off course OR discourage. Even if, it’s still a good day!
Wake up with the mindset that things are going to go well. Hold on to gratitude. Hold on to thankfulness. Be fully appreciative of the things in your life, the blessings of your life, and walk in that position throughout your entire day. Have a mindset that starts telling you, “YES, YOU CAN!” Position yourself in a place of abundant joy, and of peace, and comfort – knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be. And having the mindset to walk from that place every day is the tool you need to make today truly a great day!
Surprise! I have ONE more tool you need to make today a great day! Grace. You need to give yourself grace freely, unconditionally. When things aren’t going your way, if you step off course. If you lose your temper, or you overreact. If you have yourself a moment and it’s not pretty – give yourself grace. When you can walk in a position where your heart is eager and accepting to all the grace you deserve and more – and all the grace that you do not deserve and more. That is one way to ensure you make every single day a great day!
