I love party planning. One of my favorite things to do during summer break is to plan my son’s birthday party. While we are currently in the midst of planning his third birthday party (dinosaur-themed), I have found myself scrolling back through all of the photos from his second birthday party last summer. For my toddler’s second birthday, we planned the ultimate construction themed party. It was a small gathering of close family, and a few friends. And it was the sweetest way to celebrate the second year of his precious life! I am so excited to share with you ALL the details of his construction party theme. My hope is that this can serve as a source of inspiration and guide for toddler construction birthday party ideas.
The very first thing that I do when planning a kid’s birthday party, (after picking out the theme of course) is choose the invitations. Once the invitation is picked, I allow the invitation to serve as the general mood board and inspiration. I will use the invitation to create additional signs for the party. Additionally, I send the invitation to both my local cookie decorator and balloon installer. This allows the local companies I love to support to see my vision and use the invitation for color sourcing and further design details. (Just wait for you to see how they turned out!)
Etsy is my favorite place to shop for birthday party invitations. There are SO many different design ideas and options within your preferred theme. Plus, they are easily editable and can quickly be sent to the printer. For my son’s toddler construction birthday party I used these beautiful construction themed invitations from quillMe. In fact, I purchased an entire bundle from their Etsy shop which included the construction birthday invitations, welcome sign, food signs and banner.
I love the beautiful aesthetic of these construction birthday invitations. They are easily downloadable and can be quickly customized through Corjl.com. (The Etsy seller sends over all the instructions on how to do so upon purchase and it is very easy to follow). I would recommend editing the invitations on a computer for greater ease!
Another essential to planning a toddler construction birthday party is to figure out which construction party decorations to use. I think it is important to remember when planning a birthday party that simple often is best. What matters the most is the people spending the time to celebrate your little one. Therefore, give yourself permission to let go of the ridiculous, over-the-top influencer birthday parties that you are seeing all over every social media channel.
Yes, they look amazing. Oh my goodness, they are so fun! However, they also are really expensive, and that just isn’t sustainable or feasible for everyone. Therefore, focus on a few things that mean the most to you and your little one. My son loves balloons. Additionally, we have a beautiful stone archway that is the feature of our main living space in our home, which is a perfect place to install a balloon arch.
For us, we chose to spend the money to have a professional balloon arch installed, because that would cover so much of the decorations needed for our construction themed birthday party! If you are local to the suburbs northwest of Atlanta, I highly recommend Woodstock Balloons.
They are moderately priced and install stunning balloon garland and arches. Woodstock Balloons absolutely crushed this install. I loved the pop of color and how much energy and life the balloons brought to the party. Plus, our balloon arch makes for a great photo backdrop as well!
Another essential element to your construction theme birthday party decorations are construction signs. Specifically, signs included in the invitation bundle from Etsy. This included signs for the dessert table, food table, and the drinks. I ordered everything to be printed through Walgreens same day delivery. Then, put each sign in a small 5×7 frame.
For the entryway into the party, I had the welcome sign blown up to a (insert correct size here). I printed it poster sizer to Walgreens (the cheapest way to do so) and had the poster sign, in a poster frame, sitting on an easel close to our front door. This is another super simple and easy way to elevate your party.
A super simple way to decorate for your construction theme birthday party is to include various construction trucks throughout the room. Set up construction trucks along the food table and the dessert table. Additionally construction vehicles can be incorporated as part of your centerpiece as well!
Another element I love to incorporate within a birthday party is a guest book. Especially now, when a lot of family is at the birthday party, I love to have a space for the party guests to write a short message to the birthday boy. Pick a book that is on theme with the party and have it set up with a few pens. Tell someone at the party to be tasked with the job of making sure guests sign it, since you will be running around taking care of all the other party things. As well as enjoying being in the moment.
Additional construction party supplies can include a tool box, used to hold utensils and napkins. Additionally, yellow caution tape and orange cones would make for a great decor piece as well. I have rounded up a few additional construction party supplies that would make great additions to your construction themed party.
There are so many different ways to provide organized fun at a toddler’s construction birthday party. Truthfully, it can be a little overwhelming when you start to look at it. First, think through the guests attending the party. Will there be a lot of little kids? What are their ages? Is it best to have an organized activity, or better for the party crowd to be able to move around the party space and do as they please. For our construction-themed birthday party, we had a smaller crowd with only a small handful of young guests, therefore I decided to stick with construction-themed sensory bins and construction-themed coloring sheets.
One of my favorite things that I did for my son’s construction birthday party was create construction-themed sensory bins. I scrolled through Pinterest to gather ideas, but ultimately created my own DIY construction sensory. bins as an activity for the birthday party. Using two large plastic tubs from Target, I filled each with Kinetic Sand. Next, I put a set of small CAT construction trucks in each of the bins. For one bin, I added some rocks and sticks. For the other bin, I added in grooved popsicle sticks.
Another fun activity we set aside for other little guests during the construction theme birthday party was construction coloring sheets. Set aside on our Lalo kid’s activity table (which we love by the way) was a Construction-themed coloring book and coloring supplies for little guests to color while gifts were being opened. I loved having this little touch as an option for those who needed a fun distraction throughout the party.
Another part of the birthday party planning process that can be overwhelming is planning out the menu. It can be so easy to go over the top, when in reality, just a few basics is all you need. Honestly, simple is best!
For our menu we decided on a Chick-fil-a nugget platter, pasta salad, bean salsa, fruit salad and charcuterie board. The fruit salad is always a huge hit and is absolutely delicious. You can find the recipe for that HERE. Loved the construction signs that came with our invitation bundle from quillMe to use throughout the food table. Additionally, I placed a few different smaller construction trucks out as well for another element of decor.
Another great way (and easy way) to take your little boy’s construction-themed birthday party to the next level is to have decorated sugar cookies. This is such a beautiful way to incorporate more of the theme into your treats table. I love using Sugar Bakings, a cookie decorator close to where we live. She has made our son’s birthday cookies for every single birthday party! They are so tasty and so pretty to look at! I love laying the decorated sugar cookies out throughout the table. Plus, they are great for take home party treats as well.
For the birthday cake, we used a Nothing Bundt Cake bundtlet. I love the personal size to this cake and that my son can enjoy all that he wants of it. This has been a big hit for both him, as well as the guests. For a cake topper, I used a sweet wooden two that added the simplest of touches.
Additionally, we used these sweet construction cupcake toppers to place on top of the individual bundtinis. This also added to the overall decor and construction themed aesthetic that we were going for. I love setting all the sweet treats up on our main kitchen table to serve as a dessert table. Since the cookies are construction themed, with the cake topper, and the cupcake toppers, it makes for a really pretty sight, everything arranged together.
Additionally, there are a few other fun ideas that would make for a great toddler construction birthday party. These toddler construction birthday party ideas are things that we didn’t necessarily use, but would make for another fun way to celebrate your little boy and the construction theme. If you are having a birthday party where there are going to be more little guests, you could easily create a make-shift construction site.
Provide construction hats as a party favor and allow the little construction workers to have fun building at their own construction site. The supplies for this are super simple, either save boxes from online orders, or stop by your local Home Depot to pick up a few cardboard boxes! This is a great way for little ones to be engaged and have fun throughout the party.
Another great idea is to set up a sandbox. This was something that I really wanted to incorporate into our construction-themed birthday party, however with it being the middle of summer in Georgia, it would have been too hot. However, buy one of those cheap, plastic little kid’s swimming pools and fill it up with play sand. Add in a set of construction truck toys and there you have another construction play zone for littles to play with throughout the birthday party.
There you have it! Your complete guide on all things construction-themed birthday party. Ideas on how to make a kids’ party a fun celebration that is construction themed. I hope this post was able to serve as a source of inspiration for you as you plan out your construction birthday party theme.
