One of my favorite things about taking a little time off from the daily routine of living everyday life is the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on how things are actually going. To be able to take a step back and reflect on my own routines and how I am currently feeling in order to figure out what is going well, what isn’t, and how can I move forward in a better way. Usually, I return back to normal living with incredible hope and encouragement to achieve the things, I really want to achieve. Therefore, take a moment to go on a mind vacation in order to regroup and look at your life from the outside looking in in order to assess and regroup and have conversations and build the life you really want.
Usually during an off period or time away, healthy habits tend to go out the window on vacation. Which means it is a perfect time to reassess and replan to implement better habits and establish more concrete goals to truly go forth in the direction of your dreams. Love a vacation because of all the time to think and truly dream and step away from your normal everyday life to
While you read through this list of 10 simple steps to take back your health, it is important to evaluate the things that you are doing in your own life at the moment and to think of how you can make the slightest of adjustments in order to truly FEEL healthier. Because at the end of the day, our ability to thrive is based solely on how we feel! So why not focus on feeling GREAT!
The very first thing essential to take back your health is to hydrate. Proper hydration is essential to living well. Drink plenty of water. Here is the thing, mild dehydration (simply put, not drinking the proper amount of water that your body needs to not just survive, but to really thrive) can affect so many things.
Simply by not drinking enough water it can affect your mood, your memory, your ability to concentration, ability to react and to process certain situations. Drinking plenty of water can also lead to more energy throughout the day. By not drinking the proper amount of water your body needs, you are depleting your very own energy source. You are holding yourself back, by not giving your body the very thing it needs to be able to thrive. Additionally, it can help with weight management. Oftentimes many people mistake hunger for thirst and go to food and snacking when in reality their body is craving and needing water as a source of hydration.
How much water should you be drinking a day? Well that really depends on you and your lifestyle. The more active you are, the more time you spend outside in the sunlight, the more water you are going to need. If you are pregnant, your body is going to require an even higher water intake. A good rule of thumb for properly hydrating is to take your body weight and divide it by two – that number is the number of ounces you should try and drink per day.
An easy way to help yourself out by drinking more water is to invest in a good, quality (and bonus points if it is aesthetically pleasing) water bottle that you can drink from throughout the day. Many people find that by having a reusable water bottle with a built in straw, that the straw helps them drink more water. Plus, drinking from a reusable water bottle is a lot more friendly to our environment.
The second step to take back your health is to prioritize eating breakfast. Truthfully, this is one that I feel like many choose to overlook and skip throughout the day and I am so guilty of this. An easy change to implement to take back your health and start living your best self – eat breakfast every single day. Ideally in the morning close to the time when you wake up and begin your day. It is worth noting that eating breakfast should include eating a balanced meal full of proper nutrition and substance. Things such as wholegrain cereal, fresh fruits, oatmeal, greek yogurt and granola, an egg scramble, avocado toast, smoothies.
By eating a proper breakfast you not only are boosting your brain for the day, energizing and fueling yourself properly, but you are more likely to make better food choices throughout the rest of your day because of prioritizing eating a solid meal first thing in the morning.
The third easy change to make in order to take back your health and fill more well is to drink a smoothie a day! This can be a part of your breakfast, or some other point throughout the day. Smoothies are one of the easiest ways to get the nutrients your body absolutely needs. Smoothies fill you up. They are incredibly nutritious. Plus, drinking a smoothie a day helps you get the proper vitamins and minerals you need throughout the day. And they are very, very satisfying.
My go to smoothie recipe includes:
Personally, I use a smoothie for an incredibly easy way to get powerful nutrients in my body, as well as satisfy a little sweet craving as well by incorporating these natural sugars. It feels you up and it makes your body feel so good! Strongly encourage you to include drinking a smoothie into your daily routines in order to take back your health and live as the best version of yourself!
Additionally, another incredibly important tip to take back your health is to go to bed earlier to allow yourself to get proper sleep. Bonus points if you can go to bed BEFORE midnight! The sleep your body gets before midnight is more beneficial due to your natural body clock. By going to bed before midnight, it keeps our internal body clock steady, thus functioning at your prime. Take a moment and reflect on your own habits and think through whether or not you have healthy sleep habits.
Getting proper sleep allows your body to function to its entirety. Proper sleep allows you to feel energized, think more clearly, stay healthier because of the proper support to your immune system. Make it a goal this year to go to bed earlier and get more sleep in order to take back your health! You owe this to yourself. Focus on creating sustainable habits to live the life you truly desire!
The fifth tip to take back your health is to move your body more! An easy way to implement a quick change to be the person you desire to be is to simply move your body. It doesn’t have to be complicated, it just needs to be movement. Make a goal to move for thirty minutes a day, three to four days a week. The relationship you have with your body is a delicate one. Therefore, change the way you view exercise, and prioritize simply moving your body so you can feel good. Whether that is moving your body through a walk. Or taking a class. Do the things that you know you can do well. Set yourself up for success. Bonus points when you can move your body earlier in the day as it starts your day in the direction you hope to go.
Another great way to make healthy changes in order to take back your health is to choose healthy snacks. Snacking is the best, right? One of the easiest changes to make is to be mindful of the snacks that you are consuming. Can you make a simple switch to eat some healthier things to properly fuel you and nurture you throughout the day. Instead of going to ice cream when you have a sweet tooth, what if you change that to vanilla greek yogurt, topped with fresh berries, and a small handful of the Safe & Fair Birthday Cake granola. This granola is incredible by the way if you haven’t had it!
Another great healthy snack swap is chocolate hummus. Absolutely delicious and so fun to dip with strawberries or apples. There are so many options out there and so many great resources out there as well. Here is a super helpful article on healthy snack swaps to make to feel healthier.
Okay, this is so important to taking back your health, but often forgotten about. A way to live the best version of yourself everyday is to STOP laying in bed staring at your phone. Create a set time each day where you are completely done with your phone. If you HAVE to look at your phone before falling asleep, then add that into your evening routine and STOP looking at your phone at least thirty minutes before lights out. This gives your brain a break. As well as much healthier for your eye health.
Putting your phone away allows you to spend time cultivating the things you love to do. You can reconnect with yourself and your heart and do the things you love to do. Plus, you will get quality sleep in the process. Put your phone away before going to bed and be amazed at the change it causes in your life!
Next on the list of healthy changes in order to take back your health may actually surprise you! In order to take back your health, be sure to actually treat yourself. For many, trying to be healthier can result in an all or nothing thing. However, it is so important to still be able to treat yourself. Therefore, don’t be afraid to treat yourself. If you really want that ice cream then have it. Try to do it in moderation. Or, reward yourself by moving your body x amount of days that week and then treat yourself with a favorite indulgence as a result. Listen, the world is a crazy, crazy place, therefore we must do the things in our life that bring us joy! Treat yourself and do not feel bad about. Own it, be joyful about it and keep moving on the next day.
The ninth tip to incorporate into your daily routine in order to take back your health is to practice mindfulness. Take moments throughout your day where you can be present where you are. Moments that allow you to be incredible present in your spirituality. Focus on deep breathing and being incredibly in tune with who you are. Practice journaling or meditation to allow yourself to be re-centered to your core. By incorporating more mindfulness throughout your days and your weeks, you will definitely notice how easy of a change this is to live the life you truly desire. Practicing mindfulness is a fantastic way to prioritize taking care of you in all forms.
Finally, the final tip to take back your health this year is to embrace honesty. Be really, real and honest with yourself. Be in tune with your emotions and how you are doing! Be vulnerable with you and your emotions and check in with yourself often. Listen to your heart. Are you feeling encouraged or discouraged? We are always rushing from place to place, consuming so many things that we forget to sit with how our hearts and our minds are doing.
One of the best ways to take back your health is to honestly check in with yourself and see how you are actually doing. Bring awareness to your emotions and feelings and get the help and have the conversations you need in order to get back on track. Unless you are incredibly honest with yourself, then you are not allowing yourself to be the healthiest you can be.
Most importantly, start small. Don’t necessarily try to start incorporating all of these changes all at once because the reality is you probably won’t be able to do it all and then you will instantly feel like a failure and want to give up altogether. Because if your standard is perfection then you will fall apart in the process. Instead, start small and try to slowly build things up over time. Maybe you want to start off with just 1 or 2 and then work up to it. You can absolutely do this in order to take back your health and live as your happiest self!
Move forward with an expectant heart. Believe fully that you are capable of becoming the person you are destined to be! You will be a better person for taking back your health and creating healthy habits to live a better, more whole life. Start small, extend endless amounts of grace to yourself, and know that you can absolutely do this! Cheering you on every step of the way, and wishing you the BEST day!
