It happens to all of us. We have the plan. A vision. We know what we want—but we fill our schedules too full, stretch ourselves too thin, and commit to too much. Eventually, we reach a point where we simply can’t anymore. Burnout. It’s something we’re all aware of and try to avoid, yet somehow it still gets the best of us.In this post, I’m sharing practical, realistic strategies to help you avoid burnout so you don’t have to waste any more time—or energy—working toward the things that matter most to you.

How to Avoid Burnout Without Giving Up on Your Goals

how to avoid burnout and accomplish your goals

Oftentimes when we sit down to plan at the beginning of the new year, it can be really easy to establish big expectations for ourselves. While it is important to dream big, it can also be easy to feel defeated before the momentum even begins.

Therefore, it is so important to approach the beginning of a new year and new season with both grace and courage. Regardless of how your year has begun. Whether you have built your vision board, planned for your goals or are feeling already behind in the overwhelm of a new year. Instead of feeling defeated by a slow start or imperfect progress, let go of the idea that everything has to happen all at once. There’s freedom in releasing the all-or-nothing mentality. This belief that things have to be perfect, that you need total clarity, or that your goals must be fully mapped out before you can begin.

You are allowed to be a work in progress. When we give ourselves permission to grow, evolve, learn, and even have bad days, something shifts. We stop being afraid of failure. We stop fearing the hard moments. Because it’s in these moments when we learn the most about ourselves.

7 Steps To Help You Avoid Burnout This Year

Today’s post is going to give you the permission to feel that it is possible to not burnout and that you can absolutely move forward towards your goals. I am sharing with you tactical steps that you can take action towards right now. Seven steps you can take right now to avoid burnout this year. Regardless of your schedule, or the little time you have in your day to work on yourself. It is possible to achieve your goals without reaching burnout.

These seven tips aren’t meant to be followed in order. You don’t need to master step one before moving on to step two. Think of them as tools for preventing burnout. Ones you can reach for whenever you need support.

Tip#1 to Avoid Burnout – Allow Yourself to Have a Bad Day

The first step to avoiding burnout is give yourself permission to have a bad day. If you need two bad days—or three—that’s okay too. The key is allowing the day to be hard without attaching extra meaning to it. A bad day does not mean you are a failure. It does not mean you should quit. It does not mean your dream is no longer valid.

So many of us hit a breaking point and immediately think, “I should just stop. I can’t do this anymore.” But that response isn’t necessary. You can have a bad day without letting it define you.

Take the day off from working toward the goal if you need to. Rest. Reset. Do the things that you know help you come back feeling more grounded. You know yourself well enough to know what works. Trust that. Let the bad day be a bad day—and then move forward.

Tip #2 to Avoid Burnout – Take A Break

The second thing to do in order to avoid burnout is to make sure you take a break. It’s impossible to constantly keep working. The more you push and the harder that you work, the easier it is to feel burnt out. With burnout comes losing our motivation and losing our drive. Therefore in order to avoid burnout, make sure you give yourself a break.

Breaks are not optional. They’re essential.

This might look like:

  • intentional breaks built into your daily schedule
  • time spent doing something completely unrelated to your goals
  • moments of rest that allow your mind and body to recharge

For me, this looks like listening to audiobooks during my commute—time where I don’t have to think, plan, or produce. It’s a simple break, but it matters. Find where breaks fit naturally into your life. Schedule them if you need to. Protect them like they matter—because they do.

When you allow yourself time to take a break it allows you to reset and recharge. More importantly, by giving yourself a break, you are setting aside time to do the things you enjoy doing. And by making sure you spend time doing the things you love to do, you are going to avoid burnout in the process.

Tip #3 How to Avoid Burnout – Do The Things You Love To Do

The third way to avoid burnout is to prioritize doing the things that you love to do. Do something fun. When life feels heavy and the work feels endless, doing something you genuinely enjoy isn’t indulgent—it’s grounding.

You can approach these tips in two ways:

  • as lifelines when you’re already burned out
  • or as habits you consistently practice to prevent burnout

Doing something fun—something you love—keeps you connected to yourself. It allows you to show up as your real, authentic self instead of running on empty.

Read. Meet a friend for coffee. Watch something light. Do something that fills you up in a way scrolling never quite does. So please, be sure you are scheduling in time for yourself to do the things you love to do! Remember, you’re allowed to enjoy your life while still working toward your goals.

Choose to Spend More Time Doing the Things You Really Love To Do

Choosing what you enjoy doesn’t mean the busy parts of life disappear — it means you stay connected to yourself while moving through them. When you intentionally protect what brings you joy and keep it within your daily rhythm, the work is still there, but it no longer costs you your sense of self. And when you’re giving so much of yourself to others, the most important thing you can offer is your real, authentic presence.

Think of these as ongoing practices you return to over time — small ways of supporting yourself in your everyday life. When you approach your days with this intention, you’re setting yourself up to show up feeling more grounded and present.

Caring for yourself isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Making room for what you enjoy and what brings you joy is part of how you sustain yourself for everything you’re carrying. And when you can do that, build in moments of your day for doing the things you love to do, it can help reduce the feeling of burnout, and allow you to move towards your goals with more peace and purpose!

A Gentle Resource to Support Your Goals

Burnout often shows up when our goals become tied to pressure or perfection. If you’d like guidance in creating goals that feel realistic and life-giving, I put together a simple Goal Planning Workbook to walk you through that process — gently and without overwhelm. It’s meant to support you, not add another expectation.

#4 – Move Your Body

One of the most effective ways to avoid burnout while still moving toward your goals is simple: movement.

This doesn’t have to mean an intense workout or anything that feels intimidating. Movement is simply about allowing your body to move forward in some way — physically, gently, and intentionally.

If you enjoy physical exercise, that’s a wonderful added benefit. Walking, running, stretching, or any form of movement that gets your blood flowing can help release stress, regulate your nervous system, and create the mental energy needed to focus and follow through.

But if that feels like too much right now, there are other options — and they count just as much.

Simple Ways to Incorporate More Movement

Going for a drive.
Stepping outside for fresh air.
Walking slowly through your neighborhood.

Any kind of movement where you’re no longer sitting still can create space in your mind. When your body is moving, your thoughts often begin to move too. When you move, you start to see things differently. You gain perspective. You breathe a little deeper.

Movement helps you process big thoughts and big feelings — especially when life feels overwhelming or overstimulating. Even ten minutes can make a difference. A short walk during a busy part of your day. A quiet drive when your thoughts feel tangled. A moment outside in the fresh air.

These small moments of movement don’t just help your body — they create mental space. They invite clarity. They gently pull you out of overwhelm and back into yourself.Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be impactful. Sometimes, it’s the simplest shifts that help prevent burnout the most.

Tip #5 – How to Avoid Burnout – Pay Attention to Your Body

The fifth way to avoid burnout is to pay close attention to your body. Be in tune with your body and pay attention to what your body is telling you. Your body communicates more than you think.

Are you feeling good? Are you feeling anxious? Listen in and learn from what your body is communicating to you. Pay attention to when you feel anxious, tense, or heavy. Those are signals—not failures. When they show up, pause. Change your environment. Take a break. Do something grounding.

Even if it’s a quick break, such as going for a walk or changing your physical setting. Stand up, walk to a different room. Grab a drink of water. Take a moment and refocus your energy on something else.

Determine What Time of The Day You’re Most Focused

Another way to really pay attention to your body and learn from your body is to think about what times of the day are you the most focused? Think through the different parts of your day. When are you on, when is your optimal time of day for productivity, for focus?

Pay attention to when you are the most focused and figure out how you can work during that time. Then switch it! What times of day are you least focused? Try to avoid working during that time.

Another way to take this even further is to think through your body’s response to different foods and beverages. Do certain types of fuel limit or expand your productivity? Learning your rhythms helps you work with yourself instead of constantly pushing against your limits. Therefore, in order to avoid burnout it is essential to pay attention to your body and learn from what it is telling you!

#6 – Have a List of Super Small Tasks that can easily get done

The sixth tip to avoid burnout is to create a list of super small tasks that can easily get done. Think of small, specific tasks that don’t require a lot of thought or focus. Tasks that you can easily resort to in order to quickly check something off of your list. In order to create this list, think through your goal. As you are thinking, identify simple things that can be done in order to accomplish the goal. Keep the list accessible—on your phone, in a notebook—so you can reach for it when everything feels like too much.

The benefit of completing super small tasks are that these things will still move you forward. These small tasks will still help you get where you want to go. However, they don’t require a lot of energy or brainpower. Therefore on a day when you are struggling with time, motivation, or focus – this is a list you can rely on. And by accomplishing small tasks that will help you still reach your goals, you can avoid burnout.  Progress doesn’t always look big. Sometimes it looks quiet and simple—and that’s enough.

Tip #7 How to Avoid Burnout – Build Protected Time & Space Into Your Schedule

Finally, the seventh tip to avoid burnout is to build protected time and space into your schedule.  Think through your schedule and allow yourself time that can be specific to you. Time that is yours. Time that you are allowed to utilize in whichever way you choose.

This could be specific time set aside to work towards your goals, allowing you the peace of mind that there is time built into your day to work towards the goals you hope to achieve. Or maybe this is sacred time, devoted to moments spent doing the things you love to do. The things that fill you up and bring you joy.

The Challenge of Finding Sacred Time as Working Moms

I know just how hard it can be to find this time. Especially as working moms, finding those sacred moments in the day can be so challenging. And when we do find those small moments, it feels like a miracle and it’s amazing. But sometimes finding that time just isn’t the case.

There will be seasons where protected time for ourselves is just not guaranteed. However, stay hopeful. Know that if you are currently living in a season where time for yourself feels non-existent, that’s not always going to be the case. This is just temporary. This season is temporary.

Everything Is Truly A Season

Everything is truly a season. And it can be easy to feel frustrated in seasons where things aren’t going the way we think they should go.

Then we yearn for the moment when things will be different. However, we finally get to this place we were hoping to achieve, but this new season also brings new challenges. And we can often find ourselves missing bits and pieces of that previous season, despite how hard it might have felt at the time.

Therefore, in order to avoid burnout and work towards your goals, be sure to build protected time and protected space into your schedule. During this specific time, use it intentionally to either work on your goals, or take a break, or do the things you truly love to do.
